How to Help a Loved One Get Brain Health Care
You found this page because someone you love is struggling. Maybe it is addiction. Maybe it is cognitive decline, personality changes, or behavior that no longer makes sense. You have tried talking, pleading, researching. You are exhausted and unsure what to do next. We can help you figure that out.
The Problem You Are Facing
When someone you love is struggling with addiction, brain injury, or unexplained cognitive decline, the hardest part is often not the problem itself. It is knowing what to do about it. The healthcare system offers fragmented options. Primary care physicians prescribe medications. Psychiatrists adjust dosages. Rehabilitation facilities focus on behavior modification and peer support. Nobody evaluates the brain as an organ that may be injured and in need of repair.
Families in this situation describe a painful pattern. They watch someone they love deteriorate. They try multiple providers, multiple programs, multiple conversations that go nowhere. They spend enormous emotional and financial resources on approaches that treat symptoms without investigating their cause. And when those approaches fail, they are told the person was not ready, was not motivated, or did not want help badly enough.
That framing is almost always wrong. When someone with a damaged prefrontal cortex cannot sustain recovery, the explanation is not insufficient motivation. It is a brain injury. The organ responsible for judgment, impulse control, and long-range planning has been compromised—by substances, by trauma, by metabolic dysfunction, or by some combination of all three. Telling that person to try harder is like telling someone with a broken leg to walk faster. It does not work because it cannot work.
The Neurogenesis Project exists because families like yours deserve a different option. We evaluate the brain as a medical organ, identify what is damaged, and treat it with targeted therapies designed to repair neurological injury at the cellular level. And we start by working with you.
How We Work with Families
Dr. Drew Edwards, EdD, has spent more than thirty years working with families navigating addiction, brain injury, and behavioral health crises. He has published over 200 articles on addictive disease and brain reward systems. His approach is grounded in neuroscience, not confrontation.
Dr. Edwards does not run a traditional intervention. He does not organize surprise meetings or deliver ultimatums. He works with families to understand the neurology behind their loved one’s behavior, develop language that reduces defensiveness, and create conditions where the person who needs care can make an informed decision about their own brain health.
This approach works because it reframes the conversation. Instead of “you have a problem and you need to fix it,” the message becomes “your brain has been injured and medical treatment exists to help it recover.” The difference is not semantic. It changes the entire dynamic between family members and the person who needs care. Defensiveness drops when blame disappears. Engagement increases when the conversation is about medicine rather than moral failure.
If your loved one has been through traditional rehabilitation without lasting results, our Rescue from Rehab program was designed specifically for this situation. It delivers the neurological treatment that rehabilitation facilities are not equipped to provide.
The Process: Step by Step
We meet families where they are. The process unfolds at your pace, and every step is designed to reduce uncertainty and increase the likelihood that your loved one engages voluntarily.
Family Consultation
A one-hour conversation with Dr. Edwards. You describe the situation. He explains what is likely happening neurologically and outlines realistic options. This call can happen without the person who needs care present.
Communication Strategy
Dr. Edwards helps you develop language and framing for the conversation with your loved one. The goal is to present brain health evaluation as a medical decision, not a moral judgment. He prepares you for likely responses and how to navigate them.
Engagement
When your loved one is ready to learn more, Dr. Edwards can speak with them directly. He explains the neurology of their condition, what a diagnostic evaluation involves, and what treatment can accomplish. No pressure. No ultimatums.
Diagnostic Evaluation
At our St. Marys clinic, Dr. Orr conducts a comprehensive neurological examination, orders metabolic and inflammatory lab panels, and may recommend advanced neuroimaging. The evaluation identifies exactly what is damaged and what can be treated.
Intensive Treatment
Based on diagnostic findings, Dr. Orr builds a treatment protocol using NAD+ IV therapy, exosome therapy, stem cells, and other targeted interventions. The Intensive Brain Health Program typically runs three to five consecutive days.
Ongoing NeuroCoaching
Dr. Edwards continues working with both the patient and the family after the intensive program. NeuroCoaching translates neurological findings into daily strategies for sustained recovery, available in-person at Jacksonville Beach or via telehealth.
What Families Need to Know
The behavior you are witnessing has a biological basis. When someone you love is using substances compulsively, making decisions that seem irrational, or losing cognitive capacity, it is easy to interpret those changes as choices. They are not. The prefrontal cortex—the brain region responsible for judgment, planning, and impulse control—is one of the first structures compromised by substance use disorder, traumatic brain injury, and chronic neuroinflammation.
This does not mean your loved one bears no responsibility for their recovery. It means that expecting a person with a damaged prefrontal cortex to exercise consistent executive function is expecting a damaged organ to perform at full capacity. It will not. Not without treatment.
Families who understand this distinction—between behavioral failure and neurological injury—are better equipped to have productive conversations, make informed decisions about treatment, and maintain their own health through what is always a difficult process. Dr. Edwards helps families build that understanding before any clinical decision is made.

You Do Not Have to Navigate This Alone
If someone you love is struggling and you are not sure where to turn, start with a conversation. Dr. Edwards and Dr. Orr at The Neurogenesis Project work with families every week who are in the same situation you are in right now. The first step is a phone call.
