Dr. Drew Edwards, Chief Clinical Officer and Neurocoach

Dr. Drew W. Edwards, EdD, MS

Neurocoach & Chief Clinical Officer

200+ Published Articles on Addictive Disease & Brain Reward Deficiency

Dr. Edwards has spent four decades studying and treating the brain mechanisms that sustain addiction. His clinical work sits at the intersection of neuroscience and behavioral coaching. He does not treat addiction as a moral failure or a willpower problem. He treats it as a brain disorder — specifically, a disorder of the reward system — and designs coaching protocols accordingly.

His published research spans dopaminergic function, reward deficiency syndrome, the neurobiology of compulsive behavior, and the family systems that surround addictive disease. At The Neurogenesis Project, he leads NeuroCoaching and directs the clinical strategy for all addiction-related programs.

What is NeuroCoaching?

NeuroCoaching is not therapy, not counseling, and not rehab. It is a structured coaching process built on the neuroscience of behavior. Dr. Edwards developed this approach over four decades of clinical work and research into how the brain’s reward circuitry drives both addiction and everyday decision-making.

The premise is straightforward: most behavioral problems are brain problems. Addiction, compulsive behavior, chronic procrastination, emotional dysregulation — these are not character deficits. They are patterns produced by identifiable neurobiological mechanisms. Once you understand the mechanism, you can design an intervention that addresses it directly.

A NeuroCoaching engagement typically begins with a detailed behavioral and neurobiological assessment. Dr. Edwards maps the client’s reward system function, stress response patterns, executive function profile, and relevant family and substance history. From that assessment, he builds a coaching protocol targeted at the specific brain systems driving the client’s presenting issues.

Sessions are conducted in person at the Jacksonville Beach office or via secure telehealth. Frequency and duration depend on the complexity of the case. Some clients work with Dr. Edwards for a focused eight-week engagement. Others maintain an ongoing coaching relationship.

Who this office serves

This is not a one-size practice. Dr. Edwards works with specific populations.

Post-rehab recovery

You completed treatment — maybe more than once — and something still is not working. NeuroCoaching addresses the brain-level drivers that conventional rehab does not reach.

Active substance use disorders

You are still using and want a different approach. Dr. Edwards will not lecture you about willpower. He will map what your brain is doing and build a protocol from there.

Family members of someone in addiction

Addiction rewires the family system, not just the individual. Dr. Edwards works with families on the neuroscience of codependency, enabling, and sustainable support.

Executives and high-performers

No addiction diagnosis required. If you want to understand the brain systems governing your motivation, impulse control, and decision-making under pressure, this work applies.

How to get started

01

Request a consultation

The first conversation is complimentary. Call the office or use the online scheduling form. Dr. Edwards or a member of his team will discuss your situation and determine whether this practice is the right fit.

02

Behavioral and neurobiological assessment

If we move forward, Dr. Edwards conducts a detailed assessment covering reward system function, substance and behavioral history, family dynamics, executive function, and stress response patterns.

03

Personalized coaching protocol

Based on the assessment, Dr. Edwards designs a coaching protocol targeted at the specific brain systems driving your presenting issues. Sessions are structured, measurable, and adapted as you progress.

04

Coordination with neurology (when indicated)

If your case warrants neurological evaluation, neuroimaging, or regenerative protocols, Dr. Edwards coordinates directly with Dr. Sean Orr at the San Marco or St. Marys offices.

Frequently asked questions

What is NeuroCoaching and how is it different from therapy or counseling?+
NeuroCoaching is a structured, brain-science-informed coaching process focused on understanding and modifying the neurobiological drivers of behavior. It is not psychotherapy. Dr. Edwards works with clients on reward system function, executive decision-making, stress reactivity, and habit architecture using principles drawn from four decades of addiction neuroscience research.
Is the Jacksonville Beach office an addiction treatment center or rehab facility?+
No. We are not a rehab facility and we do not provide residential treatment, detoxification, or medication-assisted treatment. This is a private neurocoaching and brain health practice. Dr. Edwards works with individuals who want a brain-first approach to addiction recovery, behavioral change, or cognitive optimization — often after they have completed acute treatment elsewhere.
Who is Dr. Drew Edwards?+
Dr. Drew W. Edwards, EdD, MS, is the Chief Clinical Officer and cofounder of The Neurogenesis Project. He has published over 200 articles on the neurobiology of addictive disease and reward deficiency. He has spent four decades in clinical practice focused on the brain mechanisms that sustain substance use disorders and compulsive behaviors.
Do you accept insurance at the Jacksonville Beach office?+
No. The Neurogenesis Project operates on a direct-care model. You contract directly with your clinician. This removes insurance-driven constraints on session length, treatment approach, and clinical decision-making.
Can family members participate in the NeuroCoaching process?+
Yes. Dr. Edwards frequently works with family systems, particularly when a family member's substance use or behavioral patterns have affected the household. Family-focused sessions address the neurobiology of codependency, enabling, and the family's role in sustainable recovery.
How does this office coordinate with Dr. Orr's neurology practice?+
The Jacksonville Beach office is part of The Neurogenesis Project's three-location practice. When a client's situation warrants neurological evaluation, neuroimaging, or regenerative protocols, Dr. Edwards coordinates directly with Dr. Sean Orr at the San Marco or St. Marys offices. The medical and coaching sides of the practice were designed to work together.

A practice, not a facility

The Jacksonville Beach office is a private clinical practice, not a treatment center. There is no group programming, no intake paperwork designed for insurance, and no twelve-step requirement. Dr. Edwards works with individuals and families on a direct, contracted basis.

Clients travel from across Northeast Florida and beyond. The Beaches communities — Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra — are home to the office. St. Augustine, Mandarin, and the greater Jacksonville metro are within easy reach.

The practice operates on a direct-care model. You contract directly with your clinician. Insurance is not in the room.

The first conversation is complimentary. Dr. Edwards will tell you plainly whether this practice is the right fit for your situation. If it is, the next step is the assessment and a coaching protocol designed around what he finds.
